John is also grounded in environmental wellness and its human connections. Following undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of Massachusetts, he worked as a researcher examining land-use influences on the ecology of the Everglades and Florida Bay. He then explored terrestrial wildlife biology, living in the mountains of Colorado and serving as a caretaker of fledgling Peregrine Falcons whose natural history, impaired by DDT, required human nurturing to fly off of the endangered species list. After choosing oceanography as a career, John received a PhD in 1998 from the University of Rhode Island. He has since worked as an oceanographer and continues to examine natural and human influences on the ecology of the sea, publishing research and traveling nationally and internationally to scientific meetings. John lives in Santa Cruz with his wife and sons, grateful to live in such a beautiful place, where his favorite energetic reset is immersion in the cool waters of Monterey Bay. |
