Herbal MedicineThe term “Herbal Medicine’ refers to the use of a plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark or flowers for medicinal purposes. The use of plants for health and healing is one of the oldest and most popular forms of healthcare that exists today. Studies have shown that as many as one-third of all American adults use herbal products, with an estimated $4 billion spent on herbal remedies in this country each year. The use of herbal medicine is even higher overseas, with some countries reporting a usage rate of 75% or greater. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) incorporates Chinese herbs with acupuncture to treat disease and restore balance to the body. Ayurvedic Medicine from India also has a rich history of using native plants for health and wellness. In the US and Europe, Western Herbalism thrives using a fusion of Western, Chinese and Indian plants. While the scientific study of herbs in the United States began just over two centuries ago, plants have been used to treat a wide range of health problems in Asia and India for more than 5000 years. Herbal medicine has a great deal to offer for both acute and chronic health conditions. Studies have shown that herbal products can treat many ailments, including colds, allergies, digestive disorders, insomnia, anxiety, depression, headaches, arthritis, skin disorders, asthma, and a host of other problems usually treated with pharmaceuticals and prescription medications. |
